Ammonia water is used as an additive in household cleaning products (e.g. in glass cleaners). In technology, it is used, for example, to clean galvanized steel for subsequent painting (ammoniacal wetting agent washing).
In the bleachery and dye works, it is used as an inexpensive basic solution. In food chemistry, it is used as an acidity regulator and also serves to break down milk protein, cocoa products and egg products. The food additive labeling is E 527.
In the USA, ammonia water is used to kill germs in order to obtain ground meat additive from slaughter residues (pejoratively called Pink Slime). In the EU it is approved for the production of organic food.
In the Kalina cycle, the low boiling point, which depends on the mixing ratio of the ammonia water, is used to drive steam turbines with lower temperatures and the associated higher efficiency.
